Bishop Joseph Martino

Bishop Joseph Martino’s service to the Catholic Church began with his ordination to the priesthood in 1970. Retired since 2009, he has served in various capacities, including as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and as the ninth bishop of the Diocese of Scranton. His leadership style was marked by a strong emphasis on the Catholic faith and community life. His tenure was not without controversy, however, particularly when he had to consolidate certain Catholic schools and parishes. To this day, his legacy continues within the Church community. He earned both his Doctorate in Ecclesiastical History, and Licentiate of Sacred Theology from Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. And he was ordained to the priesthood in Rome as well, by Bishop James Hickey in St. Peter’s Basilica.
